New destination for wine lovers: China

Wine lovers will soon have a new luxury destination to add to their bucket list: China. The architects behind Napa Valley’s Calistoga Ranch are designing a winery and resort on China’s popular Liaodong Peninsula, the precursor to what they predict will be a wine country comparable to California’s Napa and Carmel valleys. 


The company, SB Architects, says the Golden Pebble Winery will combine “the best of the winery idea with the best of the resort idea,” including a full-production winery, a boutique hotel, a commercial village and residential villas.
SB Architects says the winery will be the first in the province. Renderings show a resort set in the mountain valley, with designs inspired by some the area's old farmhouses.
While China’s association with wine has more often been noted for the country’s exploding demand for imports, SB Architects says the winemaking industry is in its infancy, and areas like Liaodong have the potential to develop into tourism and winemaking destinations. And Bruce Wright, vice president and principal of the firm says he believes the Liaodong Province will become one of the country’s leading areas for winemaking.
